Organic gardening and farming are good for people, and good for the environment. There are three ways we benefit from it, and here they are.

Safer Water

Organic gardening and farming keep toxic pesticides out of the water supply and food chain. Pesticides can be very harmful and could even cause death once it enters into our body.  This could be possible through the water and the food we consume everyday but sad to say that nowadays pesticides contaminate nearly every square inch of the ocean and land mass of the world. Pesticides are not excreted by plants or animals, so they become concentrated as they move up the food chain and since we are at the top of most food chains, we bear the brunt of the damage.

Organic gardening and farming does not use chemicals to control pests. Pesticides are rarely used and if ever there is a need of using it, the pesticides used are made from naturally occurring plant oils and minerals, keeping our waters safe.

Soil Biomass

The soil biomass is maintained with the use of organic gardening and farming. Biomass is the total amount of living material present in an area and these includes microorganisms, insects, small animals and plants. These are all important to maintain the productivity and fertility of the soil. Biomass is necessary for good nutrition as well. For instance, no plant or animal on earth can manufactur

e vitamin B12 since it is originally manufactured by bacteria that live in the soil.

However industrial agriculture relies on chemical fertilizers to add specific nutrients to the soil for the increase productivity of monoculture plantings. If soybeans are grown for a piece of land, adding necessary nutrients to grow corn is not needed anymore. . Chemical fertilizers also sterilize the soil. Fertilizers are much needed for commercially farmed land sine the soil cannot support growth by itself alone. Plants don’t even have the capability to decompose into the soil without bacteria or insects to help them. Maintaining the biological content of the soil can be done through organic gardening and farming practices.

Healthier Food

Lastly, organic gardening and farming give us healthier food. Healthy in the sense that it is free from toxic pesticides and chemicals. We can’t wash off all pesticides since many plants take the chemicals in and they become a part of the food we eat. One primary example is apples that are grown commercially, nearly containing traces of pesticides in them.

For some reasons, organically grown food is more nutritious too. We may know what chemicals to add to soil to produce a good crop of soybeans, but we do not know everything about soybeans.  Recent discoveries are made about phytonutrients – unidentified substances in plants that are necessary for their health—and for ours too. Organic gardening and farming restores the soil to its natural, living state so that all the nutrients are present, whether we can identify them yet or not.
